The Yale Spizzwinks (?) FREE concert in De Waal Park on 27 May 2012

From Martin Myers

From the opposite side of the Atlantic Ocean to the shores of Cape Town comes a group of acappella singers that personifies talent and encapsulates outstanding entertainment – the Yale Spizzwinks (?).

The group came into existence in 1914 at Yale University and the torch has been passed down the generations of gifted performers to its current 18 members. The group incorporates an array of musical genres in their performances, including jazz, pop and rock ‘n’ roll.

The Spizzwinks (?) have won over fans including the likes of Magic Johnson, Henry Kissinger, Kelsey Grammer, former Governor George Pataki, Senator John Kerry, and Fred Savage. Furthermore, the group is enjoyed by audiences at ESPN, Disney World, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Carnegie Hall, the Honda Centre, Severance Hall and even the White House.

They have carried out shows in Asia, South America, Africa, Europe, the United States and New Zealand; and now South Africa will once again have the honour of their visit.

The Yale Spizzwinks (?)

Cape Town Small Business Websites

I am sure I don’t need to convince you that getting your small business onto the internet is of vital importance.

I love WordPress.com because you can have a website where ordinary people can update their content without paying for web hosting, graphic design and web development.

As an example of this concept, I built a new website today using only a free email address from Gmail.com and a free account from WordPress.com.

My new business, Cape Town Small Business Websites, now has a Search Engine Optimized, Mobile-Friendly website with a blog section and a Contact Form.

SAMPRA Most Played Song on South African Radio in 2011

Alone by Liquideep

These are not the fans you looking for

Over the last while I have noticed the following type of marketing approach:

“If you are bored, please listen to our radio show”

“If you have nothing else to do, please come to our concert / gig / show”

“If you have some spare time, could you please …?”

Are these really the people you want as your fans?

People that are bored and have nothing else to do.

Time to set your sights a little bit higher.

If you don’t believe that what you do is important, then why should anybody else.

Create an experience that is unmissable, and people will find the time, whether it is spare or not, and not only because they have absolutely nothing better to do.

MEET THE MAKABRA ENSEMBLE

THE MAKABRA ENSEMBLE

THE MAKABRA ENSEMBLE

www.terminatryx.com/makabra

With the recent accolades of THE ARTIST, the attention has been directed at the magic of the silent film again.
Since 2005 THE MAKABRA ENSEMBLE has been resurrecting classic silent Horror films by creating brand new soundtracks for them and performing it live to the screen.

THE MAKABRA ENSEMBLE is the brainchild of Paul Blom and Sonja Ruppersberg of the Cape Town based Industrial-Metal band TERMINATRYX – www.TERMINATRYX.com

They are also the creators and festival-directors of the annual South African HORRORFEST Film Festival every Halloween season – www.HORRORFEST.info
Since its inception in 2005, in addition to a wide range of movies and a literary feature, they incorporated the unique highlight of screening a classic silent Horror movie and performing a brand new, original soundtrack live to the screen, created by TERMINATRYX and various talented friends. In addition to Paul and Sonja, these musicians include Simon “Fuzzy” Ratcliffe (LARK, 1931 RAYGUN), Sean Ou Tim (MR. SAKITUMI, MAX NORMAL, LARK), and violin virtuoso Matthijs Van Dijk (UCT graduate & SAMRO bursary winner).
Sometimes additional musical guests are incorporated, which have included Max Starke, Lara Block, Francois Breytenbach Blom & others.

MAKABRA ENSEMBLE soundtracks across the last 8 years (performed at the S.A. HORRORFEST, OPPI KOPPI MUSIC FESTIVAL and SOUND & MOTION WHITE ROOM SESSIONS) have included vivid historical movies like:
Nosferatu (Germany, 1922)
The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari (Germany, 1920)
Häxan (Sweden, 1922)
Maciste In Hell (Italy, 1925)
The Phantom Of The Opera (USA, 1925)
Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (USA, 1920)

For 2012 there are two silent classics lined-up for new MAKABRA ENSEMBLE soundtracks, but these are still under wraps – check the web site for updates: www.terminatryx.com/makabra

The blend of the vast musical influences and abilities of these collaborators result in the creation of a unique, passionate and awe-inspiring soundtrack, breathing new life into these cinematic milestones.

Instruments utilized for these performances include everything from electric guitar, bass, and violin, to voice, programming, samples, various wind instruments, keyboards, soundFX, live drums, percussion, the theremin, samples & more, resulting in a mesmerizing and unforgettable audio-visual experience.

All of these classics with their new MAKABRA ENSEMBLE soundtracks are set for DVD release, with “Terminatryx / Nosferatu” already available on DVD, feat. the full movie with its new soundtrack, recorded live at its premiere, plus many extras (incl. the dark short film “imPERFECTION”, Makabra Ensemble live performance extracts, Terminatryx features, music videos and photo galleries).

OK you’ve got a website, so now what?

People

Image supplied by www.freedigitalphotos.net

Having a website to promote your brand and business is very important, but if nobody sees it then it is not much use.

It is like having a billboard next to a gravel road in the middle of nowhere.

As much as we might like to think otherwise, the world is not looking for you specifically. If they were, they could just type your web address i.e. briancurrin.com directly into the address bar of their favourite browser and up would pop your website.

What people are looking for is solutions to their problems, and if your website offers the right solution, then it needs to appear on the first page of search results.

Assuming that your website is already search optimized (though many aren’t) here are a few ideas on how to drive traffic to your website.

Facebook Brand Pages

Creating a Facebook Brand Page is essential now. These pages work very well for big corporates, but are also proving highly effective for small businesses. A Facebook Page is another portal to your website and when you post comments and status updates on your wall you can include links to your website.
http://facebook.briancurrin.com

Paper.li

This portal allows you to create your own online newspaper aggregating information from the Twitter, Blog, RSS and Facebook sources that you choose. Paper.li automatically produces daily news, which means every day there is at least one new quality link to your website.
http://paper.li/briancurrin

Google Adwords

Over 90% of searches done on the internet use the Google search engine. Adverts appear above and on the right-hand side of search results which try and match what it is you are searching for.

Google Adwords provides a very effective pay-per-click method of driving traffic to a website, and they also supply extensive analytic information to help with the adjusting and tweaking of this online advertising medium.

Are you using any of these tools and platforms to help grow your business?

Cape Town Folk ‘n Acoustic Music Festival

Cape Town Folk ‘n Acoustic Music Festival

18 Top South African artists: Ard Matthews, Steve Newman, Farryl Purkiss, Rory Eliot, Brian Finch, Guy Buttery, Christine Weir and Julie Blundell, Janie Bay, Gavin Minter, Louise Day, Tombstone Pete, Andrew James and Steady Tiger, John Ellis, Diesel Vanilla, Machineri, Gary Thomas, Natasha Meister, Jack Mantis.

Together with Sedgwick’s Old Brown Sherry and Marshall Music, the Cape Town Folk ‘n Acoustic Music Festival will bring together 18 top South African artists of this genre in a sophisticated, concert-style setting. The line up sees a mix of great acoustic guitarists like Steve Newman, Gary Thomas and Guy Buttery with singer/songwriter stalwarts like Farryl Purkiss, Rory Eliot, Ard Matthews and Brian Finch. The look and feel of the festival will be in the style of a 70s Folk concert –all artists will perform solo or duo sets completely acoustically. Performances will be stripped down to the essence of the songs – guitar and voice.

Add to all this some blues sounds from Natasha Meister, Andrew James and Machineri, and some folk/pop by Janie Bay and Louise Day, and the evening is set to be an experience of the finest musical storytelling from the personal journeys of some of South Africa’s best songwriters and musicians.

The festival will consist of three sets with two half-hour breaks in between. There will be a cash bar and food stalls in the CTICC foyer.

Tickets to the second iteration of Symphonic Rocks, which this year boasts performances in both Johannesburg and Cape Town, are in high demand. This should see artists such as Zebra and Giraffe, Crash Car Burn, Arno Carstens, Loyiso, Tumi and the Volume and MACSTANLEY performing with the support of a full symphony orchestra to capacity crowds at Grand West Arena West Casino in Cape Town and The Big Top Arena at Carnival City in Johannesburg.Presented by Heineken® in association with 5FM, this year’s line-up will feature a mixture of some of South Africa’s most popular artists representing a variety of genres including R&B, Rock and Pop. Additional performers include 2010 bestselling twin brothers Locnville and Zolani Mahola of Freshlyground for the Johannesburg event.According to Andy Mac, who is also the frontman for well-known Pop/Rock Cape Town outfit MACSTANLEY (formerly Flat Stanley), organisation running up to the event has been going smoothly and early ticket sales suggest that Heineken® Symphonic Rocks 2011 is set to build upon the success of Symphonic Rocks 2010.

“We are incredibly pleased with how the public has reacted to Symphonic Rocks this time around. Although announcing a Johannesburg date for 2011 was a risk, it was something we felt was necessary judging from the event reception in Cape Town last year. Fortunately, the reception has been great so far and we’re really looking forward to both events.”

Mac added that the orchestral arrangements and logistics behind the event are also going according to plan.

“Thus far we have completed full orchestral arrangements for eight of the nine artists performing at this year’s Heineken Symphonic Rocks event and they are sounding fantastic. All venue technical drawings have been completed and our team of experts are currently working on the hundreds of audio channel layouts, lighting plots and AV content required when delivering a performance of this magnitude.”

“At this moment we are co-ordinating the final aspects behind the production schedule such as artist and orchestra rehearsal and travel schedules. With over 100 performers and crew needing to be flown around the country, accommodated and transported to and from the venues it’s a monumental task, but we’re confident that everything will run according to plan.”

With regards to sales, Mac added that “tickets are selling really well – our advice is not to put off your purchase until the last minute to avoid disappointment”.

The unique match up of chart-topping South African artists and a full symphony orchestra, set against the backdrop of an impressive lighting arrangement with an ice cold Heineken® just an arm’s length away has all the makings of the musical highlight of the year.

· Tickets cost R225 in Cape Town and R225, R250 and R275 in Johannesburg at Computicket. Capacity at each of the venues is limited so fans are advised to book in advance.

Academy of Sound Engineering presents: CultureClash 2011

Background
The Academy of Sound Engineering (ASE) is South Africa’s leading sound engineering school, established in 1997. Housed at the SABC, South Africa’s broadcast hub and centre of Africa’s audio industry, the college trains over 400 new students every year. A pioneering force in the industry, the ASE team launched the first national network of sound engineering schools in the country, training over 4,000 sound engineers. Many of ASE’s graduates now hold premier posts locally and internationally.

CultureClash is the Academy’s annual celebration (organized by it’s students) which showcases its talented student. Trained to overcome the challenges of a multi-format, multi-genre event, ASE’s students are involved in every aspect of CultureClash – from mixing, recording and filming the event, to planning, and even performing! Since it’s inception in 2007, CultureClash has grown in attendance and stature, drawing some of the top entertainment acts in the country. This year’s offering features over 40 acts in total, including award winning artists like Zebra & Giraffe, Gang of Instrumentals, EvolverOne, Ashtray Electric, Voodoo Child and many more top artists.

CultureClash was created to create awareness in the audio industry of the college, it’s capabilities (and thereby to create opportunities for ASE’s students); and to create a vibrant, dynamic and challenging event to give ASE students a taste of the industry they will enter. All aspects of the Academy’s various courses in Music Production, Broadcasting, Live and Post Production are required for CultureClash; giving students a chance to show-off their skills, and learn under pressure. Proceeds from CultureClash benefit historically disadvantaged students.
