Unworldly Beauty – Springbok Nude Girls (via 1001 South African Songs You Must Hear Before You Go Deaf)

Unworldly Beauty – Springbok Nude Girls Unworldly Beauty – Springbok Nude Girls (The clue is in the title) ‘Unworldly Beauty’ is one of the Springbok Nude Girl’s quieter songs. It begins with a laid back, semi-mournful trumpet led intro that has a slight 70’s feel to it and it returns to this riff throughout the song. Theo Crous’ guitar is kept in check by some lush orchestral … Read More

Sony Music Africa is proud to announce the release of Karen Zoid’s highly anticipated 5th studio album in late 2010.

Karen Zoid - *Terms & Conditions

Karen Zoid - *Terms & Conditions

It’s official – Karen Zoid is gearing up for an eventful summer with the release of her fifth album, *Terms & Conditions.

The new album is set for an early November 2010 release.

Anticipation for a new Karen Zoid studio album has been very high since her last solo album Postmodern World was released in 2007, with the smash hit single ‘Aeroplane Jane’.

*Terms & Conditions is a strong mixture of Afrikaans & English rock, folk & alternative songs representing a return to her musical core & live performance base.

New Afrikaans radio single ‘Bly By My’ is a heartfelt beautiful song describing the quest of finding new love and wanting that person to stay with you – it’s a rock & roll love song.

New English single ‘Do what you do’ is an happy song about sticking to your guns and doing what ever makes you happy, forgetting about what anyone else would say or do. Whatever curve ball life throws at you, just do what you do and bounce back.

The new singles will be delivered to radio over the next few weeks.

Some information about: ‘Susanna van Biljon’

Karen Zoid plays the lead role in a new Franz Marx movie, ‘Susanna van Biljon’, which premiered in South African cinemas on 24 September. The movie theme song “Want as ek droom” will be re-worked for the new album.

Some information about Karen Zoid:

The release of Karen’s first solo album, ‘Poles Apart’ (2002) fired up the imagination of both media critics and the public when this charismatic self determined artist burst onto the SA music scene with the hit single ‘Afrikaners is plesierig’.

In 2003 fans were introduced to songs like ‘Beautiful’ and ‘Ons soek rock & roll’ on Karen’s sophomore album ‘Chasing the Sun’.

2005’s ‘Small Room’ (from her 3rd studio album ‘Media’) was a breakthrough single for Karen exposing her to a wider radio audience. ‘Small Room’ developed into one of SA contemporary radio’s most rotated songs in that year.

All three albums achieved GOLD status.

Then 2007’s ‘Aeroplane Jane’ (from Karen’s 4th studio album ‘Postmodern World’) created Karen’s most wide spread & impactful airplay hit to date, introducing the entire country to her quirky & uniquely individual songwriting and voice – establishing Karen Zoid as a major female icon and household name.

Time Magazine and US News & World Report highlighted Karen Zoid’s role as a female icon in the South- African market. First year students at Universities study her writing as part of their academic modules and with a SAMA award for Best Female Artist under her belt, her return with the new album *Terms & Conditions and debut starring role in a major cinematic release sets her up to achieve new levels in her career.

Karen Zoid’s ability to write gorgeous, delicately rendered songs with a vocal delivery that can be both tender & powerful, combined with her particularly well known super-charged live rock energy and distinctive personality, will undoubtedly make this release yet another landmark achievement in the life of an amazing South African woman.

From Mahala

Monday, July 26th, 2010 by Duduzile Mathebula, images by Claire McNulty

Blk Sonshine at the Alexander Theatre somehow manage to transcend the venue’s rich ambience. It says a lot. Right in the heart of Braamfontein’s student district, by day the place bustles with workers and thousands of locals who live in the surrounding high rises. And by night the new middle class colonizes the streets: visible, boisterous and good-natured they trek here for sounds like no other.

Blk Sonshine is Masauko Chipembere and Neo Muyanga. Their first eponymous release came out in 1998. After ten-years, during which the duo split apart, one to the States, the other to Slaapstad, they released their second album, Good Life. They blend soulful melodies and percussive flurries over an acoustic flow evoking hip hop, jazz and folk among other traditional African influences.

The Alexander auditorium was happily full on the night. First up was Bongeziwe Mabandla, an up and comer, who dazzled with nothing besides a voice and a guitar, sincerely setting the tone for the show. After him was Two-parts Black who have rapturously diverting harmonies, then Tumi Molekane, poet turned MC, joined in. With spryly conscious rhymes and velvet lyricism, he was always going to be a crowd pleaser.  Then Blk Sonshine took over. I had to recline in my seat and take in the music. It was like a show tailored just for me. The band played a set list right out of my dreams. “Borders”, “Born in a Taxi”, “Building” and “Crazy,” – all firm favourites. Painter Nico Pocco – who did the covers for both their albums – dressed in a dashiki and white pants busied himself with canvas and paint (dirtying his pants). Soon an abstract painting emerged. The artist who has been with them from the beginning is a testament to the band’s easygoing commitment to keeping in touch with their roots. You’ve got to love that.

There’s sometimes a moment when audience and band are in unison live. Brought on by a familiar note, a gesture or a shared something in a song. At this show that moment happened during the tantric “Soul Smile”. Helped by its acoustic sparseness which enables intimacy as the vocals sink foxily in.

Songs from The Good Life made the crowd beam. It’s a much praised and understandably loved release. Watching the duo effortlessly interact with the audience, I was struck again by how consummate they are at winning a crowd, hatching a vibe and filling a room. The highlight for me was when Tumi returned with the rather dull MXO (who at this stage should like totally retire or completely renovate his sound). Along with Two Parts Black they all performed “Nkosi”. Masauko helpfully explained that Nkosi has a double meaning: “It means you know God for all those who believe, or just plain Thanks for anyone who doesn’t.”

The night came to a euphoric close with the song “Bahlalefi” (Sotho for “wise people”) from the first album. It seemed an appropriate end to a show dedicated, movingly, to the memory of Robbie Jansen and the dear departed Busi Mhlongo. Blk Sonshine are carrying the fire. We should thank them.

Lira gets Madiba’s 92nd party started with stirring live tribute

Nelson Mandela Tribute Day

Nelson Mandela Tribute Day

Lira and Soweto Spiritual Singers got Nelson Mandela’s 92nd birthday celebrations off to an early start with a stirring – and extraordinarily emotional – live tribute to the global peace and reconciliation icon tonight.

Performing at Sony’s 3D experience pavilion “3D world Created by Sony” at Nelson Mandela Square in Johannesburg, on 4th July two weeks ahead of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela’s birthday on July 18th.

The highlight of the evening’s performance was undoubtedly when Lira performed a version of the1985 anti-apartheid anthem, “(Something Inside) So Strong”, written by British poet, songwriter and singer, Labi Siffre. There was not a dry eye in the audience at Sony’s 3D experience pavilion when Lira sang this moving song for a man whose vision for a post-apartheid South Africa created the space for someone like Lira to take the spotlight.

“(Something Inside) So Strong” was just one of several songs performed by the multi-award winning, multi-platinum-selling artist in honour of Mr Mandela and beamed into his home via a live Skype link.

Adding emotional impact to Lira’s live show was the presence of the Soweto-based Soweto Spiritual Singers who have been catapulted onto the global stage through an inspired collaboration with R. Kelly – “Sign of a Victory”, the official 2010 FIFA World Cup Anthem (as featured at the event’s opening ceremony on June 11th and on Listen Up! The Official 2010 Fifa World Cup Album). The warmth of the Soweto Spiritual Singers offset Lira’s emotion-packed performance that gave every indication of her love for the man South Africans know simply as Madiba.

Lira’s tribute to Mr Mandela saw the singer (who was named Best Female Artist two years in a row – 2009 and 2010 – at the annual MTN

South African Music Awards) confirm her standing as South Africa’s premier solo female artist. Performing in front of an invited audience, this very special event proved a fitting start for the upcoming celebrations in honour of South Africa’s most beloved public figure.

A recorded version of the performance is now available on YouTube and several other digital platforms.

Locnville

Locnville

Locnville, the South African identical twin duo behind the hit song “Sun In My pocket’ penned a worldwide deal with Sony Music International yesterday.

Andrew and Brian Chaplin said it was a dream come true for them and they were honoured to be on the same label as some of their favourite artists.

The first international single to go to radio is the title track, Sun in My Pocket. Locnville’s debut single and album, both entitled ‘Sun In My Pocket’, will be released around the world on Sony’s Jive Records imprint over the coming months, except in the UK, where it will be released on Sony’s Epic Records, except in the United Kingdom where it will be released on Sony’s Epic Records imprint.

Jive Records is home to some of the world’s biggest recording artists, including Usher, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and R Kelly.

Kevin Lawrie, president of Sony Music International, Europe and Africa, had the following to say: “The Locnville guys wrote and recorded the album on their own and approached it from an independent standpoint. Sony’s role is to now broadcast this great story to the rest of the world.”

In an interview I did with the duo at the beginning of the year, they expressed that their only “only specific goal [in the music industry] is to see how far we can take Locnville. I want to expand our boundaries by collaborating with people you wouldn’t expect us to; I want to do it all.” They also said they “do plan to go international but they wanted to have “a foundation” in their home country before taking it overseas.”

Locnville are set to conquer the global scene, watch out for them!

A double album of pure African music magic for 2010 on ‘Hello Afrika’

Those looking for a soundtrack to the surge of pride that’s gaining momentum throughout the land ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ need look no further than Sony Music’s upcoming release, ‘Hello Afrika’.

Due to hit shelves on May 31st, ‘Hello Afrika’ is an accessibly-priced, double-disc that provides a platform for close to 40 artists from across the African continent and the Diaspora to express their passion and support for the first FIFA World Cup to be staged on home soil.

“Hello Afrika” showcases the brilliance and unparalled diversity of Africa’s musical talent.

“There was never any way that the different musical styles and artists from South Africa and the rest of the continent could fit on one official album and so the idea of a double album of strictly African artists was conceived,” a Sony Music Africa spokesperson says.

‘Hello Afrika’ is the perfect musical festival companion piece to the FIFA World Cup South Africa™ football festival – based, as it is, around songs by African artists who feel so passionately about the world’s biggest sporting event that they have written and recorded hit tracks specifically for it.

Leading the charge is iconic South African Afro-folk singer-songwriter, Vusi Mahlasela, whose anthem for returning exiles and political prisoners, ‘When You Come Back’, has been re-recorded in gooseflesh-raising style and is being used as the theme song for the tournament by UK broadcaster, ITV.

Mahlasela is joined by a host of other South African artists – many (like Ternielle Nelson, Jason Hartman, UJU, Louise Carver, Aya and Deep Level on ‘Shosholoza 2010’ and Ntando, Jason Hartman, Nhlanhla Nciza, Kesha, Teargas and Siphokazi on ‘Rise Up Mzanzi’) singing together for the first time and creating music magic along the way.

Also underscoring the wide-ranging musical talent of the host country are the likes of multi-award winning Afro-pop stars, Freshlyground and Malaika, hip hop artist Capsolys, rockers The Parlotones, Arno Carstens and Just Jinjer (in a remix featuring Tumi), urban dance innovators Brothers of Peace, jazz singer Lorraine Klaasen, Sotho group Tau Ea Matsekha, singer Kethi and kwaito trio TKZee in a unique mash-up with electronica duo Goldfish. South African-born, US-based DJ and producer, Gavin Hardkiss adds a global sheen to the mix with the track “Mundo Via Afrika (House Mix)” featuring Rita Bonita.

In the spirit of pan-Africanism that defines 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, ‘Hello Afrika’ also features some of the continent’s best loved artists, among them Kenya’s ‘Nameless’ whose moving ‘Coming Home’ about an African player who must leave his family to play abroad, is one of the double-album’s treasures.

Veteran Ivory Coast act Magic System adds fire to the mix with the track ‘Zouglou Dance’ and there are amazing contributions from Nigeria’s Nneka and M.I., Senegal’s Moh Dediouf and Barbados-born, German-based Judy Bailey (in a collaboration with UJU). A superb multi-artist offering is ‘Africa’s Moment’, performed by Ghana’s Lynx collaboration featuring several performers from the West African country including Richie, Asem, Zigi, Eazzy and OJ.

Finally, helping turn ‘Hello Afrika’ into something lasting and truly special is the United Nations song ‘8 Goals Away’ that highlights the importance of the eight Millennium Development Goals created by the UN.

This inspirational song brings together Benin’s Angelique Kidjo, Senegal’s Baaba Maal, Mozambique’s Mingas, Kenya’s Eric Wainaine, South Africa’s Yvonne Chaka Chaka, HHP, Soweto Gospel Choir and Hugh Masekela and Zimbabwe’s Oliver Mtukudzi – and its expansive lyrical and musical themes sum up ‘Hello Afrika’s’ intention to be the definitive all-African music compilation in a time of unity and celebration.

* ‘Hello Afrika’ released on May 31st through Sony Music Entertainment Africa.

Final mix on the album is by Tim Bran (The Verve’s recent UK#1 album).

Wonderful Wild’s first radio single ‘Dreamer’ achieved high rotation airplay peaking within the Top 20 Airplay Chart on the SA Hot 100 and will close its fourth month on the chart at the end of April 2010. The New single ‘Emergency’ has just been sampled to radio and has received instant playlist adds on 94.7 & KFM. Arno has just completed the music video for the single in the UK, which will screen on South African TV in early May.

PRESS RELEASE

Jeff Dunham is known around the world for the YouTube-hit “Achmed the dead terrorist” (over 200 million views on YouTube)

Jeff Dunham is one of the funniest partners in show business. He has amassed legions of loyal fans throughout the United States and abroad with thousands of sold-out theater and comedy club performances, countless television guest spots – including numerous Tonight Show appearances with both Leno and Carson– and with two top-rated specials on Comedy Central.

Dunham’s comedic skill, impeccable technique, and sleight of hand make him a master of his craft. Sony Music is the official supplier in South Africa of Jeff’s two recently released platinum-selling DVDs: “Spark of Insanity” and “Very Special Christmas Special”. And as an added bonus, Sony Music has also released a Limited Edition Boxset that contains both DVDs. This boxset will only be available while stocks last!

Warrick Sony unleashes his latest Kalahari Surfers album

Kalahari Surfers - One Party State Album Cover

One Party State by Kalahari Surfers

One Party State (Lester Gabang):

Warrick Sony, fresh back from the African Soul Rebels tour (12 cities across the UK with 2 other West African bands) unleashes his latest Kalahari Surfers album. This one features heavy dubstep style wobbly-bass-groove tracks and cut up voice samples from some of poet Lesego Rampolokeng’s performances. Themes tackle some of the bizarre aspects of living in a third world banana republic (nothing specific though always hinted) – the track “A New Kind of Leader” features a woman voice saying these words in an atmosphere of twisted electro uncertainty “He was a new kind of leader / He spoke simply Everyone could understand / He was a man of the people / He had his own vision For boys and girls“. Danceble and simultaneously unsettling.

A lot of the tracks are strangely scary or haunting while they do underscore some of the current South African terrors and dilemmas. Hugely danceable the title track, One Party State, is almost a Krumping classic with crowd chant and a megaphonic voice samples. The album is a return to a shorter ‘song’ format with lots of radio and TV voice cut ups and one haunting song Twin Peaks type song which includes the lyric “good people have left / criminals have rights.” The most powerfully political album since their 80’s Recommended Records releases ‘One Party State’ is a musical tour de force of the variables of a fallible democracy.

Some Tips for the Self-Employed

I have been self-employed since September 2005 after a long and lucrative corporate career.

In January 2009 I dropped Sony South Africa as a client (I was doing freelance corporate sales for them), as the energy required to maintain that relationship was not worth the income. Since then I have focused on online marketing and music-related ventures. For example I am the content editor for Rhythm Music Store.

So here are some of the things that I do, that you should find useful.

  • I love music and technology and I am very fortunate to be able to generate income from both these passions. Try to earn money from doing what you love, then it isn’t work.
  • I use Gmail for my email. Have been using it for years. Its free and can be accessed from any computer connected to the internet. And I can send from any of my various email addresses, just by choosing from a drop-down list.
  • I have started using Billy to do my quoting, invoicing and statements. That’s http://billy.co.za. Amazing web-based system.
  • WordPress Blogs are incredible and they are free … and I can blog by simply sending an email. Facebook helps you to talk to your friends, a blog helps you talk to the world.
  • I always ask for a 50% deposit and I don’t start on a project until I have received payment. Unless you are an accountant don’t spend your time chasing the money.
  • I broke my one man business down into separate corporate divisions: Sales, Marketing, Accounts, Production. It makes it so much easier for the allocation of my time and energy.
  • I try not to spend money I don’t have to, especially not on staff or outsourcing.
  • I have refused to accept certain clients and have even refunded clients on the rare occasion. Sometimes the money is just not worth the frustration.
  • I avoid people who give me bad energy.
  • I use a number of Google products, such as Calendar, Feedburner, Analytics, Adwords and Adsense.
  • I use OpenOffice for my document and spreadsheet requirements. It’s free and compatible with Microsoft Office.
  • I subscribe to blogs by thought leaders like Seth Godin and Jeff Bullas. These guys, and many others, talk a lot of sense and have helped me greatly.
  • Reassess and re-strategize your business often. I do it every two weeks at least. I sit quietly in a coffee shop away from my computer and other distractions and do mind-mapping on sheets of paper. And from that I generate action plans. Writing this blog post was one of those action plans that came from a recent meeting I held with all my divisional heads.
  • I have an accountant that is my buffer with SARS. I don’t fix my own car and I don’t do my own taxes.
