Die Vloek Van Die Kitaar: 18 Afrikaanse Rockers 1979-2001

Die Vloek Van Die Kitaar 1979-2001

Die Vloek Van Die Kitaar 1979-2001

This CD compiled by Dirk Uys in March 2002, and released by EMI in May 2002, is now long out-of-print, but inspired by Marq Vas I have linked to the songs that are available to download on Rhythm Music Store.

This album collected the A to Z of Afrikaans Rock (from Akkedis to Karen Zoid) at the time, as well as most of its genres like blues, boogie, industrial, punk, hip hop, rap, reggae, metal and more.

I seem to remember Dirk telling me at the time that he would have liked to include a David Kramer  song but wasn’t able to get permission. Not sure what song it was, but I have included David Kramer’s Bokkie Bokkie as a digital bonus track.

Artists – Tracks

  2. Spinnekop – Tiger en Louise
  3. Akkedis – Cybersurferraver
  4. Koos Kombuis – Kaalvoet

  6. Springbok Nude Girls – Pappa ek wil ‘n popster word
  7. Beeskraal – Strate van Pretoria

Ramfest 2012 – success

RAMFest 2012 Johannesburg and Cape Town a thunderous success:

RAMfest weekend with 4 international acts from 4 different countries and the best in SA support kicked off at Fourways in Johannesburg on Saturday 10 March. Traffic jams from early in the day made it evident that this was going to be a big day. Approximately 12 000 fans rocked up and withstood early evening rain to see the biggest RAMfest production yet culminate with a stellar set by headliner In Flames from Sweden.

SA greats Fokofpolisiekar, The Narrow, Shadowclub, Newtown Knife Gang, Chromium and Pestroy all delivered great music. AWOLNATION (USA) took to the stage at 17h00. Their single “SAIL” is currently charting on 5fm and Tuks fm and according to social media comments, SA fans loved every minute of it. NETSKY (Belgium) featuring MC Darrison and Infected Mushroom from Israel also added many new fans to their worldwide list. Ultimately it was the Swedish metal phenomenon In Flames that took the crowd by storm – this is what RAMfest has been building on for the past six years: To give thousands of fans a memorable experience of the best there is in global alternative music.

The Ramfest crew flew down to Cape Town early on Sunday morning 11 March to bring the same raucous metal playground to the south. With scorching weather and 5 000 happy fans, the 5 city trek ended on a high note.

The Olmeca electronic stage headliner Drum and bass master NETSKY (Belgium) tweeted “I am so happy right now, Cape Town is incredible. One of the best crowd`s I`ve ever experienced.” Other acts that had the crowds going on the electronic stage were Niskerone (JHB and CT); Double Adapter (JHB); HAEZER (CT); Das Kapital (CT) and many more.

Main organiser Dawid Fourie says: “The 2012 event was a great success with almost 20 000 people reached across 5 cities. We are very excited for the future of the event.”

RAMfest would like to thank the media and sponsors for their great support.

Kwela For Mandela – Randy Rambo En Die Rough Riders (aka Die Naaimasjiene)

From 1001 South African Songs You Must Hear Before You Go Deaf

Kwela For Mandela – Randy Rambo En Die Rough Riders (aka Die Naaimasjiene) (Prisoner 46664 probably never heard this on its release)

Die Saai Lewe by Die Naaimasjiene

Die Saai Lewe by Die Naaimasjiene

Randy Rambo sounds like a promiscuous machine gun toting all American hero, but he wasn’t, he was Theuns Engelbrecht, a disaffected Afrikaaner growing up during apartheid’s death throes. He and his Rough Riders recorded an album called ‘Die Saai Lewe’ which achieved the unique feat of being the only Afrikaans album to ever be banned in its entirety by the apartheid government. The album was re-released in 1997 but under the guise of Die Naaimasjiene, the group’s new name.

‘Kwela For Mandela’ was one of the tracks on this album and was performed live at the Houtstok Rokfees and sounds like The Aeroplanes recording in a township in the 80’s. It’s got that township bass that I have always imagined is what actually powers the minibus taxis, and the 80’s synthesizers and slightly off key vocals that give it a home cooked feel. There is also a lovely jazzy trumpet interlude.

Of course the lyrics were controversial at the time. No one with a white skin was allowed to give Mandela the time of day, let alone a whole kwela (despite the song not really being kwela), but Randy was prepared to break with tradition and the result was this little gem which, although it got zero attention from the mainstream, was an important building block in the growth of Afrikaans rock music.

Rock the River SA 30 December 2011 – 2 January 2012

December 30th 2011 – January 2nd 2012
New Year’s Festival

stay tuned for all the newest updates and news from ROCK THE RIVER SA

Over 100 acts spread across 3 stages
I don’t know if you’ve had a moment to check the calendar recently, but I’ve got some alarming news – it’s almost the end of November already! Which means Party Season is effectively upon us.
Before you run screaming for the hills in a panic-induced sweat, take a moment to breathe, we’ve got your New Year’s covered. This year there is no need to scurry about making last-minute plans, driving in stupid queues to get to the Coast or frantically trying to ascertain which party in town will be the coolest – you can organise it all right now and rest easy that you will be sorted come New Year’s Weekend. This year’s Rock the River SA New Year’s Festival will take place at the Cape Town Ostrich Ranch, located 20 minutes’ drive from Cape Town along the N7 towards the West Coast. Which means you will be able to enjoy your New Year’s in a safe, natural environment, away from the bustle of the inner city, listening to awesome tunes amongst awesome people. True party animals can settle in on the 30th from 15h00 onwards for camping, enjoy a drink at the bar and participate in some fun festival activities before the party marathon kicks off on the 31st.

Even better news is that Fokofpolisiekar will be headlining this year’s Rock the River SA New Year’s festival. Currently one of SA’s most popular rock acts, Fokofpolisiekar has become known for their explosive live performances and raw on-stage energy. Fokofpolisiekar was named “Best Live Local Band” in the 2008 FHM Awards (March 2009 issue). Controversial and ever-questioning in their lyrics as well as their lifestyle, the band has generated much controversy in the South African media.

Come join us for some outdoor fun and entertainment this New Year’s weekend and make it one to remember!

Tickets are available at the gate, Computicket, www.rocktheriversa.co.za, from participating bands, as well as Shoprite, House & Home, Checkers and Checkers Hyper.
Limited Early bird tickets available: Sold out.
Three-day weekend pass:
Presale: R300
At the gate: R350
One-day Sunday pass: R150 (at gate only)

Die US Woordfees WOW Kerskonsert 2011

Kaartjies is beskikbaar by Computicket vanaf 9 November teen R100 per persoon.

Verder is ʼn kontantkroeg beskikbaar.
