REBECCA BLACK: WINNERS AND LOSERS | FUTUREHIT.DNA

A week ago, I certainly didn’t intend to write (or obsess) so much about Rebecca Black and her viral internet meme “Friday”. However, there is so so much to learn from this track. In one week, this song basically upended the music business conversation. What are the results of this? – Jay Frank

Natalie Becker

Natalie Becker - image from Women 24

I’m looking through the movies coming up this week on DSTV and I see that ‘Disgrace’ is showing, and that it stars “John Malkovich and Natalie Becker”. Now, if you’ve seen that movie, you will know that our Natalie has a very brief 2-minute cameo as the prostitute that John visits, so I’m not sure why she is billed as a co-star…but hey, that’s our outgoing and not-publicity shy Natalie, who seems to be among any and every collection of social p … Read More

Things to blog about

Thought I would share my “to do” list of topics, ideas and themes I am planning to blog about sometime soon:

  • Santana’s Guitar Heaven album review.
  • “I am too busy to blog”
  • “My customers aren’t on Facebook”
  • Websites are dead
  • There are more people sharing content than there are creating content
  • Stop chasing: news, customers, money
  • I don’t watch TV or listen to the radio or read newspapers – how you going to sell to me now?
  • “Twitter is a waste of time”

Come to Cool Runnings Victory Park tonight – don’t passover.

Yo,
Just a quick heads up to say I’m doing the comedy thing at Cool Runnings Victory Park tonight alongside:
Vittorio Leonardi & Martin Davis (UK)

Yes, you heard correctly. Martin Davis is from the UK and therefore must be really good. That’s why we put UK in brackets like that, so that more people come, because as we all know coming from the UK instantly makes you a good performer. Like the time Johnny Foreigner (UK) came here to play and we all went to see even though no-one in the UK has actually heard of them and they just happen to be the organiser’s cousin. From now on I will bill myself as Deep Fried Man (once spent 3 months in the UK) which I’m sure will do for my career what Ricky Martin hopes coming out the closet will do for his.

I’m performing at 10pm. the others start at 8.

To my Jewish brethren, apologies for my gigging on second night passover, and for having it off with all those shiksas, and for my failure to observe the laws of kashrut and/or believe in God. If its any consolation I feel extremely guilty. All the time.

I have attached a picture of a meadow vole, which you may agree has precious little relevance to the content of this email.

Later,
Deep Fried Matza-balls

Does Humour Belong In Music?

In 1984 Frank Zappa posed the question: “Does humour belong in music?” (though he used the American spelling of humor).

There has been humour in music for a long time, and it seems at the moment that there is resurgence of South African musicians taking a look at themselves and our society and embracing the humour of diversity.

Here are three examples:

Die Antwoord – Zef Side

Jack Parow – Cooler As Ekke

Deep Fried Man – It’s Complicated

Fred Durst (from Limp Bizkit) loves Die Antwoord

From Deep Fried Man

Well hello there.
It has been a while, my lovely little mailing list. Welcome to new members!
Much has happened in Deep Fried Man-land since last we spoke.

Last Saturday night was Vinny and Dirty Gav from punk band Vendetta Cartel’s birthday party at Cool Runnings Victory Park. I had a great time playing there alongside the birthday boys and Rambling Bones.

And, the Cool Runnings gods liked me so much that I will be back there tomorrow night for a comedy session alongside Chris Forrest and Warren Robertson.
This is the future for Deep Fried Man. People laugh at me when I play, and it’s about time that I pretend that I am trying to make them laugh on purpose. So, I will be doing more comedy shows and less music gigs for the time being,
So, if you’re keen, come through.
Cool Runnings Victory Park, corner Rustenberg and 2nd Street, Victory Park Shopping Centre.
Tomorrow night (Tuesday 9 Feb), from 8pm.
Entrance is free!
The gig is brought to you by Rockford Media: http://www.facebook.com/RockfordMedia

Meanwhile, Andre Scheepers’ super-radio friendly version of It’s Complicated has earned the illustrious positition of no. 4 on Stellenbosch’s MFM charts.
And the video ZSkilz and I made has been doing the rounds, even attracting the attention of 5FM’s Leigh-Ann Mol, who posted it up on Facebook and tweeted about it on Twitter.
Thanks Leigh-Ann, and if 5FM wanna reconsider their decision not to playlist the track let me know…

Meanwhile, ZSkilz and I have updated our old track Lank Hardcore for 2010. Stay tuned for the video…
You can listen to it on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/deeplyfried and, for a limited time only, you can reply to this mail asking for a free mp3. Because here at Deep Fried Man-corp we care about you!

Love and, like, bunnies and marshmallows and stuff.
