Try to imagine what a cross between Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison and Rodriguez would sound like, throw in Mark Knopfler and The Stones, and you are close to the sound of Falling Mirror, South Africa’s hit band from the ’80’s.

Remember the hit songs ‘Johnny Calls the Chemist’ and ‘Neutron Bop’ that topped local charts and even received some recognition in America?

Well, “Johnny’s Back!” albeit for one night only in The Barnyard Theatre, Willowbridge on Sunday the 28th of April, to Rev up the Rock. This concert will also form part of an upcoming major international documentary that will tell their unique rock story and capture the band’s reconnection with their audience.

Founding band members and cousins, Allan Faull (lead guitar) and vocalist Nielen Marais (the band’s name is a play on their surnames) together with drummer Patrick Humphries, were known as a non-performing, inordinately introspective group whose debut album ‘Zen Boulders’ was critically acclaimed upon release and gained a cult following for the band in SA. Now joined by George Den Das (Keyboards) and Harvey Cohen (bass guitar), Faull (recognised as one of South Africa’s best ever guitarists) together with Humphries’ rock-firm percussive patterns and Nielen “Mirror’s” bold, captivating voice and lyrics makes this one-night-only live performance a rarity and a must-see.

Nielen’s voice is probably the most distinctive feature of Falling Mirror’s music and it has often been compared to Dylan’s and although that artist’s influences still weave through some of Nielen’s songs, his sound is undeniably authentic and unique. Nielen is a man with a story to tell and he does so with his exquisitely beautiful music, unmistakable voice, timeless melodies and haunting lyrics. Allan’s guitar playing has the neat clarity of Mark Knopfler, deceptive simplicity, with incredible diversity and delivered with great emotion.

Unusual, hypnotic and totally addictive, Falling Mirror remains unique in SA and world rock, and has stayed rooted in the nation’s musical psyche ever since ‘Johnny Calls the Chemist’ was released.

Black Sheep Rockonspiracy

The Black Sheep Rockonspiracy is the brainchild of East German-born Kilian Nestler, who made South Africa his home in 1994. He was previously involved in the semi-legal blues-rock East German underground as a fan, photographer, manager and creator of illegal anti-establishment merchandising. This lifestyle choice led to a 14 month prison term.

The band known currently as Freygang Band was formed in East Berlin in 1977 under the then oppressive socialist regime, as Freygang. The Blues euphoria in East Germany was reaching its peak at that time and the fans loved Freygang for their courage to freely express themselves. Progressive musicians and their fans had to survive troublesome times, including arrests and performance bans. Freygang have kept their appeal to younger audiences, by becoming harder, even with a touch of punk, through the inclusion of musicians who used to be fans and by always being authentic.

Nestler found out that in apartheid South Africa, under somehow similar, but political opposite circumstances, musicians like Piet Botha, had to endure the same troubles as Freygang. Piet Botha, who celebrated a 30 year recording career in 2009, is regarded by many as a true soldier of the Rock ‘n’ Roll lifestyle and an inspiration to fans and fellow musicians alike. These two forces, against all odds, still live the true spirit of rock ‘n’ roll, and Nestler had the vision to make them known to each other.

A desire for freedom and a dislike of politics, is the common background from where Freygang and Piet Botha emerged, as Piet Botha once said ”…that’s why we got into rock ‘n’ roll … we wanted to change the system”.

Kilian Nestler met Piet Botha at a few gigs and the idea of the Black Sheep Rockonspiracy was born.

The STRAB Festival, which was started in 2003 and is held every year in previously war-torn Mozambique, became the anchor point for creating a cultural exchange. After STRAB Mozambique 2013, Freygang will tour South Africa, collaborating and performing with a host of progressive South African bands.

This unique exchange will be documented by ARMADA FILM from Germany, and there is also a joint recording session at the HOME GROWN MUSIC STUDIO planned. The final highlight of this collaboration will be at the MERCURY in Cape Town.

Besides playing together, there will be discussions regarding the way artists can contribute to a better understanding of different cultures, how to use art and music as a weapon against ignorance ( i.e. xenophobia, religious intolerance, etc.) and many more important issues of the day.

Piet Botha and Akkedis will travel to Germany in August 2013 to perform at Freygang’s own underground festival and a number of other gigs.

Thanks to the unselfish contribution of many good-meaning people, the project has started to take shape, and who knows what the future holds, but one thing is for sure, the spirit of Rock ‘n Roll is alive and well.

Triple M Entertainment books Founder of iconic SA band Bright Blue to perform a FREE Concert in De Waal Park on Sunday 2 Dec 2012

Robin Levetan was the lead vocalist and founder of iconic SA band Bright Blue whose uniquely infectious blend of pop, rock and mbaqanga established them at the forefront of the progressive music scene in the 80′s and 90′s.

Robin’s writing extended to the theatre and his highly acclaimed counter-culture play, “Skyf” broke attendance records at The Baxter and Market Theatres. His second play “Mrs Kaplan and the Witchdoctor” was also performed at The Baxter and was later staged at various festivals in Eastern Europe by students at UCT.

After leaving Bright Blue, Robin continued to write songs and, in 2009, teamed up with producer / musician, Roger Bashew. The pair were joined by Willem Moller (guitar), Paul Tizzard (drums), Selwyn Schneider (keyboards, vocals), Tonia Selley (vocals, percussion), Shaggy Scheepers (keyboards), Buddy Wells (sax) and Jessica Levetan (vocals), together with Bright Blue band mates Ian Cohen (bass) Dan Heymann (piano) and Tom Fox (guitar).

The resulting 12 track album, “A Far Country”, was launched at the CTICC in 2011.

Robin has been performing with a group of top local musicians who will join him at De Waal Park on 2 December from 4pm till 5.30pm (Entrance is free ..) where they will perform songs from the album as well as new material and some Bright Blue favorites. CD’s will be on sale at the event.

If their past two sold out concerts in these beautiful gardens are anything to go by, it is going to be one fun filled, super family afternoon with happy grooves, dancing and picnicking to Mango Groove`s greatest hits.

Mango Groove and Claire have only performed a select number of shows in SA this year, as they have been busy on two very big projects:

Mango Groove is currently working on a film and musical project: months of writing and pre-production so far, but a very important and long-term project for the group. In John’s words ‘’While we have a way to go yet, this is undoubtedly the biggest, most exciting and most challenging project we have ever worked on. Watch this space!’’

Claire has been busy for the last few months working on an all-new Claire Johnston album that is in essence a celebration of great South African songs through the decades. In Claire’s words: ‘’I am insanely excited about this project. It is a concept I came up with a while ago, and it has been great finally to get back into the recording studio. The album is very much a celebration of South African music,and to that it extent it has a strong Mango Groove influence. At the same time, however, it is also very different and distinctive, and I am hoping to surprise a lot of people with the treatment we have given to a lot of the songs. I will also be working with some of my favourite SA artists on key tracks, which will be a great honour for me. The album is due out early next year, and I will undoubtedly be following up with a number of key live performances built around the project’’.

Their 2012 release: ‘’Shh: Have You Heard? The Ultimate Mango Groove Collection’’ is available in stores nationwide. This is a limited, collectors’ edition: that is a triple pack (2 CDs, 1 DVD). It features all the Mango Groove hits and videos.
